The Fury Of The Northmen

Werewolf (V)

ᚷᛟᚾᛞᚢᛚ

The Vikings know them as “gondul” and “gylfin” and fear them greatly, for as men they pass undetected and (save for their savage appetites and temperaments) undetectable, and as wolves they are larger and more ferocious than any natural wolf. Viking society is particularly vulnerable to werewolves, for there are many isolated settlements and farmsteads for werewolves to prey upon.

In their human form, werewolves tend toward height and muscle. In their wolf form werewolves are much larger than ordinary wolves and have much darker fur.

The following is an entry for a werewolf in its wolf form.

Medium beast, evil

Armor Class 14 (natural armor)
Hit Points 75 (10d8+30)
Speed 40 ft

Str 18 (+4) Dex 16 (+3) Con 16 (+3)
Int 10 (+0) Wis 11 (+0) Cha 10 (+0)

Shapechanger. The werewolf can use its action to shapeshift into the form of wolf, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its Armor Class, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Keen Hearing and Smell. The werewolf rolls with advantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing or smell.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The werewolf makes two bite attacks each turn.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+4) piercing damage.

MOTIVES

Werewolves are wicked individuals, driven by an unbearable hunger and a savage temper, and most everything they do is to sate their hunger and sate their temper by hurting others.

ALLIES

Werewolves’ allies include other werewolves and other wolves, both ordinary and dire.

NORSE vs EUROPEAN WERWOLVES

The werewolf of Norse myths and legends was a fearsome beast—but it did not have a silver vulnerability, it did not have a hybrid/in-between form, and it did not hunt in packs. It was, in other words, a genuinely Nordic creation, rather than something influenced by various other European werewolf traditions. I’ve chosen to use this more historically and mythically accurate version of the werewolf than the usual European variety.
