The least powerful of Ásgarðr’s female “gatherers of the slain,” the swan maidens are women gathered together by the Æsir Freyja in her great hall at Folkvangr and trained in the arts of war and magic. They are then sent forth by Freyja to carry out missions for her on the Nine Worlds. 

Swan maidens are women of Ásgarðr carrying long swords and wearing shifts of swan feathers. They are beautiful in a forbidding way.

EQUIPMENT

  • Swan Shift. The swan maiden wears a swan shift, a suit of divine swan feathers. It is +1 divine animal hide armor and grants the wearer the ability to fly 60 ft as a move action. 

Divine Weapons. Any weapon that the swan maiden wields is magical. 

Magic Resistance (from sword). The swan maiden rolls with advantage on saving throws against all spells 5th-level and below. 

Spellcasting. The swan maiden is a 13th-level 
spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is CHA (spell save DC 17, spell attack bonus +9). The swain maiden will have the following spells prepared:

  • Cantrip (at-will): fearsome display, fire bolt, ray of frost, true strike, whisper through the fire 
  • 1st level (4 slots): expeditious retreat, freeze weapon, jump, shield
  • 2nd level (3 slots): blur, invisibility, scorching ray
  • 3rd level (3 slots): counterspell, dispel magic, lightning bolt
  • 4th level (3 slots): back to your world, greater invisibility, manacles of flame
  • 5th level (2 slots): cone of cold, primal speed
  • 6th level (1 slot): chain lightning
  • 7th level (1 slot): become fire 

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The swan makes three +3 dwarf iron long sword of cleaving attacks each turn.

Hit: 14 (1d10+8) slashing damage. On a successful hit, if the target is wearing magic armor or using a magic shield, the target must make a DC 15 DEX saving throw or lose the magic defensive bonus for the armor or shield for 1 hour. 

On a critical hit the +3 dwarf iron long sword of cleaving does 36 (5d10+8) slashing damage, and the target must make a DC 15 DEX saving throw or lose the magic defensive bonus for whatever magic armor or shield they are wearing. 

Fly-By Attack. A swan maiden in flight can make a fly-by attack if it has flown in a straight line for 20 feet toward a victim. On a successful melee weapon attack, the victim must make a DC 15 DEX saving throw or be knocked prone.

A swan maiden carrying out a fly-by attack can take the rest of their movement after the attack in whatever direction she desires. 

MOTIVES

A swan maiden obeys Freyja’s commands in all things.  

ALLIES

Swan maidens’ allies are each other and various birds, including ravens and eagles, both Miðgarðr-sized and divinely sized.
