The Fury Of The Northmen

Hel Wolf ()

ᚺᛖᛚ ᚨᛗᛒᚨᛏᛏᚱ

Hel is in soe respects a mirror image of Ásgarðr, having a goddess’ hall (Hel’s Eljúðnir) like Odin’s Valhǫll, matching outer walls, a divine guardian (Banahǫgg) to match Ásgarðr’s Heimdall, and of course a population of the dead to match (and numerically dwarf) the einherjar. Hel even has an analogue to the Valkyrior: her handmaidens (“ambáttr”). Hel’s handmaidens do not audaciously intervene in battles to change their outcomes and to reap the most souls of brave men. What the handmaidens do instead is intervene in wars, to change their outcomes and make more men cowardly instead of courageous, so that when they die they will be Hel’s property rather than Ásgarðr’s.

The handmaidens are dead women—human, ælftrǫll, and weredýr—who have been granted a minute fraction of Hel’s power and the ability to roam the Nine Worlds in exchange for willing service to Hel. They are typically beautiful and appear to be alive and vital, but they always have some patch of blue skin on their body—always well-hidden—which will reveal that they are the creation of Hel.

At the end of each of their turns an affected creature may make additional saving throws to end the effects.

MOTIVES

Carry out whatever missions Hel has set aside for them. Obey Hel in all things. And have fun out there.

ALLIES

The handmaiden’s allies are their Hel-stallions, then other handmaidens, then the undead they summon, then the dead, then the other servants of Hel. (It’s a bureaucracy-of-Hel thing, you wouldn’t understand).
