Most animated objects are ordinary objects, tools, and weapons given magical animation and told to obey the orders of their creators. Some animated objects, however, were magical before they were given animation, and moreover were subjected to special spells, such as rune spells, during the animation process.
This results in sentient animated objects—living, thinking tools and weapons. These differ from golems and the usual sorts of constructs only in terms of size and the range of actions that the sentient animated objects are capable of doing.
The following is an example of one such sentient animated object: a magical long spear given life by the application of either the ᛗ maðr rune of the Æsir Baldr or the Angelcynn ringed cross to the spear’s shaft.

Antimagic Susceptibility. The dancing spear is
incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic
field. If targeted by dispel magic or struck by
an antimagic weapon, the dancing spear must
succeed on a CON saving throw against the
spellcaster’s spell save DC or fall unconscious
for 1 minute.
False Appearance. While the dancing spear
remains motionless, it is indistinguishable
from a normal long spear.
ACTIONS
Multiattack. The dancing spear makes three +1 bleeding, dancing, and piercing long spear attacks each turn.
+1 Dancing Long Spear of Bleeding and
Piercing. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft, one target. Hit: 15 (2d10+4) piercing damage + 3 bleeding damage.
Trip. As an action the long spear suddenly
sweeps the legs out from its opponent. The
target must make a DC 14 DEX saving throw
or be tripped and fall prone.
Parry. As a reaction the long spear can parry a
target’s attack. On a successful hit by an opponent
the long spear can roll 1d10 and reduce
the damage done by the target’s attack by the
results of the die roll.
MOTIVES
Surprisingly intelligent, the animated spear is a
sentient, living being whose motives tend toward
seeing that justice is done and the rules of the Æsir
are followed. Other sentient animated objects have
different temperaments and different motives.
ALLIES
A dancing spear is often found in the company of
warriors and adventurers.
