ᚷᚨᛚᛏᛁ-ᚠᛚᛃᛟᛏᚺ
Human-animal hybrids are a common part of the mental, physical, and spiritual universe of the Northmen. Whether they are in fylgja form, like the boar-woman, animal-headed and human-bodied, or like the centaur, human-torsoed and animal-bodied, half-human half-animal hybrids are seen as a part of the mundane world—a frightening one, but a natural one—as well as part of the Nine Worlds.
The boar-women (“galti-fljóðir”) are separate and distinct from most other human-animal hybrids, however, for they are not natural. They were created by the Æsir Freyja to carry out her orders on Miðgarðr and to keep the borders between Miðgarðr and the other Nine Worlds firm and unyielding. As such, the boar-women are devoted worshipers of Freyja—not every creature knows its destiny and place in the universe so well as the boar-women—and ferocious, like a boar, in enforcing Freyja’s wishes—they are to Freyja as the berserks are to Odin. If this brings the boar-women into conflict with otherwise well-inclined humans, well, that’s just more souls to be sent to Freyja’s hall Fólkvangr by the boar-women.
The boar-women have boars’ heads from the neck and shoulders up and the bodies of well-formed human women from the shoulders down. They always appear fully armed and ready to fight and never in groups of less than four.
